​Who is Audubon Society of Portland?
Audubon Society of Portland is a conservation organization that has inspired people to love and protect nature in
Oregon for over 100 years. Through our conservation and education programs, wildlife care center and sanctuaries, we strive to foster a region where people and wildlife can flourish together.

What is the TALON Program?
The TALON Program, a training and employment program for young adults aged 16-20, is designed to introduce
participants to careers in conservation, wildlife care, communications, and environmental education. TALON's
goal is to give young adults a real life, hands-on experience that will better prepare them for a job in one of the many fields within conservation.

Operating out of Portland Audubon's East and Northwest locations during the training and apprenticeship period,
TALON aims to reach the diversity of racial and ethnic communities living in Portland, Gresham, and Clackamas.

The TALON Program consists of:

• Ten Saturday training sessions
  
• Ten weeks of summer employment in environmental education, community science, communication, wildlife rehabilitation, or trail building.
  
• Ongoing mentorship with Portland Audubon staff
  
• Education and skill-building in natural history
  
• Diversifying the environmental movement
  
• Paid employment!
  

Each training session will be scheduled on a Saturday beginning April 2019. Participants must attend 9 out of 10
Saturday training days to be eligible for apprenticeship assignment.

Who Are We Seeking?
This program is primarily for young adult’s aged 16-20 who represent diverse racial or ethnic backgrounds. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. Candidates should have a continued or emerging interest in learning about the various fields in the environmental field.

The EAGLE program (Early Adventures in Golf for a Lifetime of Enjoyment) is a unique internship program that is a cooperative venture between Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R), The Western Golf Association, and public high schools located within the city of Portland, aimed at introducing students to all aspects of golf course operation. Qualified students are paid an hourly wage, receive work credit hours, and have a mentor who monitors their progress. In addition, scholarship opportunities are available from their involvement in our program.

Since 1992, over 80 students have successfully completed college on Evans Scholarships received through PP&R’s EAGLE program. PP&R is proud of its long standing partnership with the Evans Foundation and continues to support youth the EAGLE Program.

PP&R’s EAGLE program is accepting applications through April 6, 2018,  from qualified freshmen currently enrolled at high schools located within the City of Portland. Students interested in joining the EAGLE Program should contact Portland Parks & Recreation’s Carolyn Lee at [email protected] or 503-823-5076.
EAGLE Program Eligibility Requirements

• Only freshman attending public high schools within the city of Portland* are eligible to apply for this three-year program;
• Students who are selected for the program work in the clubhouse or on the golf course at minimum wage;
• All participants are required to work full-time during the summer;
• Must have good attendance in school;
• Must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5;
• Must come from a financially disadvantaged family;
• Must go into the EAGLE Program with the expectation of completion; and
• Must submit two (2) letters of recommendation from a school counselor and/or teacher.

*Students who attend high schools that are not located within the city of Portland should visit the WGAESF website for caddie opportunities.

Evans Scholarships are supported by the Western Golf Association, and valued at more than $100,000 over four years. The requirements for an Evans Scholar are based on financial need, good citizenship, being in the top 10% of one's high school class, and two years either caddying or working in the golf business.

A history of or current interest in the game of golf is not required. EAGLE students successfully completing the program become eligible to apply and compete for an Evans Scholarships during their senior year of high school. This scholarship provides college tuition and housing at the University of Oregon and may be renewed for up to four years.

“The EAGLE caddie program is a successful Portland Parks & Recreation partnership with public high schools,” says Portland Parks Commissioner Amanda Fritz. “We want more young people to follow Portland’s previous Evans Scholarship winners and take advantage of this unique and rewarding program where they have the opportunity to gain work experience while earning money, and potentially continuing their education through a full college scholarship.”

“The EAGLE caddie program is one more way we provide our mission of ‘Healthy Parks, Healthy Portland’,” says Portland Parks & Recreation Director Mike Abbaté. “I encourage all interested students with drive and initiative to apply in what could be a life-changing experience!”

Greenpaces Restoration and Urban Naturalist Team (GRUNT) is a volunteer environmental science and job skills program that connects youth to nature and environmental careers. During the program, participants go on exciting environmental adventures, conduct real scientific research and discover a variety of natural resources career options. 

Successful completion of this fun, FREE training leads to eight weeks of paid summer work with Nature Day Camp or the Youth Conservation Crew. Alumni are eligible to continue with paid internships and job opportunities until they are 25 years old.

Who can apply?High School sophomores and juniors can apply. Teens of all races, ethnicities, religions, genders, abilities, English language proficiency and economic backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Youth must be able to walk three miles on uneven ground and safely handle sharp tools.

All eligible applicants who turn in a complete application before the deadline will be offered an interview. Twelve teens will be selected to join GRUNT.

Youth ACT
Youth ACT (Activist Conservation Team) is an Audubon Society of Portland training program that fosters conservation and advocacy skills, provides community organizing and outreach tools, and deepens environmental policy education.

This new initiative is being led by experienced staff from Portland Audubon’s conservation and education teams.  Stephanie Taylor, Portland Audubon’s Conservation Field Organizer brings years of experience as an environmental activist and has worked for a variety of organizations including Oregon Wild and the Pacific Wolf Coalition. Her interests span from forest and animal defense to the mitigation of climate change and include a strong emphasis on environmental justice and equity issues. 

Stephanie will be joined by Tim Donner, Portland Audubon’s Environmental Educator. Tim has been working with youth in outdoor education settings for over a decade, and has led numerous Portland Audubon youth trips including week-long trips to Yellowstone, backpacking trips in the Wallowas, and international trips to Belize. He has a passion for connecting youth to nature and is excited to collaborate with Stephanie to provide an engaging and much-needed program for youth in our community. 

​We are seeking youth who: 

• Are between 14-18 years old
• Have an interest in environmental conservation, advocacy, wildlife care, or community science

Location: Training days will be based out of Portland Audubon’s Sanctuary in Northwest Portland, with some of travel offsite to different events and greenspaces in the greater Portland area. Portland Audubon will work with youth to provide transportation to the sanctuary, if needed. Advocacy opportunities may arise at offsite locations with transportation provided from Portland Audubon.
