from Outdoor School - A History 1966-1996
Over the years Multnomah Outdoor Education has leased 13 different youth camps for the Outdoor School experience. Beside the lower cost, leasing accommodates the fluctuating levels of available 6th grade students. Camps used have been Colton, Collins, Trout Creek, Howard, Canby Grove, Adams, Nate Creek, Crestview, Sports Acres, Eagle Fern, Arrah Wanna, Trestle Glen, and Sandy River. As Multnomah Outdoor School reaches its 30th anniversary the cumulative number of participating 6th graders has reached over 180,000. The program has sustained due to its value to youth and the support of parents, teachers, administrators, and the taxpayers of Multnomah County. It is one of the very few remaining Outdoor Education programs originating under Title III of the Elementary & Secondary Education Act of 1965. It is a leader in the field nationwide and a tribute to the diligent work of the thousands of Outdoor School staff who work so intensely, so devotedly, and under such rugged conditions for so many long hours. They exude the SPIRIT of Outdoor School- It shows! The results? A generation of school students who will be better informed on natural resources and their wise use, than any local group before them. In the future, a generation of voters who will be better equipped to make important and meaningful decisions when conflicts in human and natural resources arise. In the work years ahead, a generation of adults who realize a better living in a world that requires ever-increasing vigilance over dwindling natural resources. In a lifetime ahead, a population that will gain an increased pleasure from the out-of-doors because they will better understand the wonderful inner workings of Nature. |
