MESD Outdoor School is one of the premier residential environmental programs in the nation. For over 50 years, students from throughout Oregon’s Multnomah County and beyond have spent a week in the woods learning science, meeting friends, and working with incredibly talented staff members. Outdoor School Field Instructor: The field instructors specialize in one of four field study areas, which include: plants, animals, water or soil science. Field instructors plan and develop the sixth grade curriculum for their field study area, and with the help of a program leader, train and mentor high school student leaders to help teach the field study. They supervise sixth grade students, assist in daily duties, recreation and other duties as assigned. There are four field instructors at each site. Temporary seasonal and permanent year-round positions available. |
4th Grade Overnight Field Instructor: The 4th Grade Overnight field instructors specialize in field study areas that cover all academic areas. This program is based on the theme of Oregon History and includes environmental education, living history, social studies, language arts, art, music, physical education, science, mathematics and reading. Field instructors lead activities, train high school student leaders to lead activities, supervise fourth grade students, assist in daily duties, recreation activities and other duties as assigned. Hiring in winter. |

Outdoor School Program Leader: Program leaders build collaborative communities of sixth grade students from different schools. Program leaders supervise and mentor high school student leaders in their leadership of cabin groups, assist in teaching environmental field studies, supervise daily duties, recreation, and other duties as assigned. There are 6-8 program leaders on each site team. Temporary seasonal and permanent year-round positions available. |
4th Grade Overnight Program Leader: The 4th Grade Overnight program leader works collaboratively with the site supervisor to administer the 4th Grade Overnight program. In addition, the program leader provides guidance and instruction to high school volunteers in their role as instructors and supervisors of fourth grade students. Program leaders also supervise fourth grade students, assist in daily duties, recreation activities and other duties as assigned. This program is based on the theme of Oregon History and includes environmental education, living history, social studies, language arts, art, music, physical education, science, mathematics and reading. Head Cook and Cook Assistant: The Multnomah ESD operates sites in Boring, Corbett, Sandy, and Otis, Oregon. There is one head cook and between one and five kitchen assistants at each site. The head cook oversees food service and cooks for approximately 160 people. Kitchen assistants prepare food, clean up and wash dishes. Outdoor School is known for its delicious, home-cooked meals. This is a temporary, seasonal position. Room and board available at some sites. |
Registered Nurse: Registered nurses at each site work cooperatively with site staff and classroom teachers to provide for the health and safety of Outdoor School participants. This rewarding role is a residential position that requires nurses to live on site during the Outdoor School week. Outdoor School weeks are typically Sunday - Friday. Each site is located in a beautiful setting in the western Oregon Cascades or on the Oregon coast. |
