Makeup / Alternate Workshop Options

MESD Outdoor School > For Student Leaders > Makeup / Alternate Workshop Options

Anyone who doesn't attend the regular workshop will automatically receive information about makeup workshops.
Skip to Options for Returning Student Leaders (mobile)

Options for New Student Leaders

You MUST register to be a Student Leader and be approved by a parent or guardian and your high school guidance counselor prior to attending any workshop. A workshop is required for EACH SESSION you wish to attend Outdoor School or 4th Grade Overnight.

Choose one of the following options:

1.  Attend Part of the Regular Workshop
If you can come to just the Friday portion, or just the Saturday portion of the regular overnight workshop, that can count as your workshop for the session. You must provide your own one-way transportation if you need to leave early or arrive late, but you may still take the provided bus for the start or end of the workshop. Let us know in advance if you plan to use this option, so we know who to expect coming and going: outdoorschool@mesd.k12.or.us or (503) 257-1600.

2.  Attend a Makeup Workshop
Alternate workshops are also available after the regular workshop. If you are registered to be a Student Leader prior to the regular workshop and do not show up for it, you will be automatically invited to attend a makeup workshop via e-mail, regular mail, or both. See below for the makeup workshop details and schedule.

OUTDOOR SCHOOL
For all makeup workshops for new Student Leaders, you will be placed at the site that has the most need for additional Student Leaders. This may be a different site than the one you originally registered for.
Please RSVP to attend a makeup workshop!

On-site Makeup Workshops
On-site workshops typically happen on Sunday of weeks 2, 3, and 4 at every site. You can take the regular Sunday Student Leader bus to the MESD, and from there you will board a bus to one of the Outdoor School sites. At the site, you will receive lunch and some field study and cabin area training. You must find your own transportation home from the site around 4:00 pm (if you need assistance with transportation, please contact the office to arrange this in advance: (503) 257-1600 or outdoorschool@mesd.k12.or.us; typically we offer a shuttle from one site only to the Gateway Transit Center—you may do your training at that site even if you are ultimately assigned to a different site for your full week).

Makeup Workshops at MESD
These workshops happen at the MESD building (11611 NE Ainsworth Circle, Portland OR 97220). You must provide your own transportation to and from the MESD (if you need assistance with transportation, please contact the office to arrange this in advance: (503) 257-1600 or outdoorschool@mesd.k12.or.us; typically we offer a shuttle to and from the Parkrose Transit Center).

In-School Makeup Workshops
These workshops happen at area high schools after school. You must provide your own transportation home after the workshop.

4th GRADE OVERNIGHT
There are two makeup workshops scheduled BEFORE the regular workshop for the 4th Grade Overnight. These will take place at the MESD from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Please RSVP to take advantage of one of these options!

Options for Returning Student Leaders

You MUST register to be a Student Leader and be approved by a parent or guardian and your high school guidance counselor prior to attending any workshop. A workshop is required for EACH SESSION you wish to attend Outdoor School or 4th Grade Overnight, even if you have been a Student Leader before!

2.  Help at the Family Open House Event
Each site holds an afternoon / evening family open house event each session before the regular workshop (typically on Sunday or Wednesday). You can volunteer to lead tours and answer parent questions at your site. This is a great opportunity to meet the new staff and re-connect with your site at the beginning of the session. You may volunteer for this event even if you still plan to attend the regular overnight workshop! You must provide your own transportation both ways to your site. This session's open house is scheduled for
Sunday, March 29th, 2020, 4-6 pm.

3.  Help in the Outdoor School Office
The weeks leading up to the start of the session are a flurry of preparation in the Outdoor School office. You can volunteer one afternoon after school to help us stuff envelopes, prepare name tags, apply labels, etc. (nothing glamorous or difficult, but it all needs to be done!) Contact the office at (503) 257-1600 or outdoorschool@mesd.k12.or.us to arrange a day to come in to help.

4.  Become a Student Leader Recruiter
Attend the Student Leader Recruiter Meeting and packet assembly before the session, and find out how you can help increase our Student Leader numbers at all sites. The first part of the day is devoted to assembling packets of information that go to the 4th and 6th grade teachers each session. The second part of the day is all about getting your friends and classmates to join you at Outdoor School or 4th Grade Overnight. Lunch will be provided, but please RSVP so we know how much pizza to buy (outdoorschool@mesd.k12.or.us or (503) 257-1600). You must provide your own transportation both ways to the MESD for this event. The Student Leader Recruiter meeting for this session is scheduled for Monday, January 20th, 2020 (no school—MLK Day).

5. Help in the Parking Lot on Workshop Friday
You probably remember the organized chaos of the MESD parking lot on Friday afternoon as everyone prepares to depart for workshop. We could use extra helpers there. Take the bus from your school that afternoon and check in at the "questions" table when you arrive to be given a job (again, nothing difficult or glamorous; you may be a glorified traffic cone, but an important one). If you can arrive via your own transportation before the rest of the buses start to arrive, that's even better. Either way, you must arrange your own transportation home from the MESD parking lot on Friday evening. Contact the office to take advantage of this workshop option: (503) 257-1600 or outdoorschool@mesd.k12.or.us.

6.  Attend One of the Makeup Workshops
See the information for New Student Leaders about makeup workshops. You may take advantage of this option. If you are registered prior to the regular workshop and do not show up for it, you will be automatically invited to attend one of these makeup workshops via e-mail, regular mail, or both. As a returning Student Leader, you are likely to be placed at your preferred site for your makeup workshop, but if your preferred site is full for the weeks you are available, you may be asked to go elsewhere.

7.  Contact Your Site Supervisor
If none of the options above work for you, contact your Site Supervisor for additional ideas. In the weeks leading up to the session, they are incredibly busy people, so this should be your last resort. Their first 6 ideas for you will be the ones listed above.
