A Week in the Life of a Field Instructor at Eagle Fern Outdoor School
​MEETING WITH YOUR SLs ON MONDAY NIGHTS
Monday night social hour is designated for meeting with the Student Leaders on your field study. It happens after their first full day of teaching (or being model taught) and is a good time to check in as a group.

Ask how their day went, and give each an opportunity to share
  • Roses & thorns, Smarties & DumDums, etc.
  • ​Best thing a kid said or did that day

Go over the plan for the rest of the week
  • ​Who is teaching their own group tomorrow
  • How the class sizes affect group sizes

Assess comfort level with the material​
  • Have SLs rate themselves on ability and / or comfort with each station
  • ​Find out who needs more help at which stations

Introduce the evaluation process
  • Show and explain the evaluation rubric
  • Bring out previous evaluations for returning SLs to look over

Set or revisit goals
  • Set Tuesday goals
  • Set goals for the week
  • Set evaluation goals

Do something fun as a group
  • Write a field study song together to perform at a meal
  • Play a game
  • Make some beads to exchange with each other
