WAYS TO HELP RETURNEES GROW
Remember when you have them help with things that are normally more staff-ish that you still need to be there to help / look out for them – don’t just have them do your job.

Things to talk about:

Let them know what you expect of them as a returning SL.
Teach them to be a mentor for other SLs.
Ask them for something new that they’d like to do.
Provide new resources / information (field guides, cue cards for harder activities, or even science information from the internet).
Ask their opinions.
Work to set more challenging and in depth goals (you can let them check out the evaluation rubric for ideas).
Encourage them to take initiative.
Discuss the way they always do things and new stuff they could try — branching out even if the way they do it already is wonderful.

Things for them to do:

Model teach for a new Student Leader on Monday.
Take a group with challenging students or larger groups for field study.
Lead part or all of the field study intro.
Try to teach a familiar topic in a novel location (a new hiking trail or station location).
Lead a review-based stall activity at the beginning or end of field study.
Design a new cue card or activity.
Do activities in an unfamiliar order.
Do their least favorite activity in new ways until they "own" it.
Spend one day on another field study to observe and get ideas / perspective.
